Outdoor Portfolio shots with Rebecca Monroe at Stanmer Park

The lovely actress and model Rebecca Monroe has been working with me recently on a portfolio update which we’ve done in several shoots both in the studio and outdoors on location. I always enjoy an opportunity to experiment with new techniques and locations. This particular shoot was on a chilly, grey, autumnal day in Stanmer Park with a beautiful hired dress, and I tried out my cheap Zeikos fisheye adapter whose low-quality optics lent an unworldly Lomographyesque quality to some of the shots. Rebecca was delighted with them.

Photography Tips #1 – Fill Flash

With summer here, loads of barbecues, weddings and parties happening every weekend, plus all those lovely holiday photo opportunities, I thought I’d drop you a quick tip to help you get the best from your camera. Whatever camera you use, it’ll probably have a flash… and chances are at the moment you only use that flash at night or indoors. So here’s how you can get better results, sometimes even stunning images, using your camera’s flash by day. The problem with all this sunlight is that it comes from a bright point source (remember your GCSE physics) that casts sharp shadows across the face. From any direction this will cause problems with faces – if it’s directly overhead, you get bright forehead & cheeks, with dark eyes. If it’s behind, then you get dark face or whited out sky because the camera can’t capture that wide a range of lighting conditions. Even if the sun is in front of your subject, it makes them squint which still ruins the photo. The solution – turn on your flash and take the photo with the light coming from slightly behind and to the side of your subject.

If you don’t know how to override the automatic settings on your flash, it’s usually easily achieved. You’ll probably see a button with a lightning icon – pressing it will cycle through several modes, the one you want resulting in a plain lightning icon (ON) appearing on screen. Try taking a photo in bright conditions and the flash should fire.

Now try it on a face as instructed above. You should get a well illuminated face against a brilliant blue sky, or whatever else is in the background perfectly exposed.

I Leave My Mark's Beach Hut 44 - photography by Jon Silver

Debbie Brown of I Leave My Mark at Beach Hut 44 - photography by Jon Silver

I’ve been involved with many charities over the years but when Debbie Brown of Brighton’s I Leave My Mark came to tell me about her project, her mission had a special resonance for me. Aiming to help bereaved & traumatised children, ILMM is especially poignant for anyone with children, and anyone in the middle of their life pondering their legacy and wondering how they can help make a real difference. And I’m willing to bet it’s the first charity based at a beach hut in Brighton & Hove!

I’ve done the initial photography with Debbie at Beach Hut 44 down on Hove seafront, and shall be there on promenade on Boxing day with my children (and camera) for the first I Leave My Mark event.

Not Just Studio Portraits

People often assume that portraits have to be done in the studio, but a versatile photographer should be able to take good portrait photos anywhere, using either portable studio lighting or the beautiful natural light. Sometimes the atmosphere provided by a location helps you to relax and get into your… mojo. Perhaps an outdoor location like your favourite beach, or a park – even the playground. Your own home could provide a “Hello Magazine” look and feel, or maybe the sumptuous interiors provided in a hotel, bar or restaurant might be just the the thing your photos need for that original look. Prices from around £99.

Here are some on-location portraits from the gallery… come and book your own shoot soon, and don’t hold back on the location possibilities!

Party photo shoots for hens, teenagers, and everyone

One of the services I offer at my studio is the makeover party photo shoot. Everyone gets their makeup done by a professional makeup artist, and their photo taken, with lots of dressing up and sometimes the mild influence of alcohol (over 18s only, naturally!). Everyone agrees it’s a lot of fun, and I frequently get a guest from one party booking her own, or indeed the same party girl coming back each year for birthday after birthday. You can dress in your best, or even in fancy dress to a theme. Pretend to be fashion models, glamour models, or just be a bunch of girls having a great time.

Book yours now, for your hen weekend, birthday party, Christmas treat, Halloween party or just to celebrate being together. The price is £35 per person, minimum 6 people.

I organised a surprise photo shoot for a few of my friends birthdays and we had a fab time – felt really comfortable in front of Jon and the make up artist did a great job. They listen to our input and we chose a lot about what happend. Had a really good time and the pictures came out really well as well. – Lizzie

Have had two party sessions – one with my 11 year old daughter and the other with my 8 year old daughter. Both occasions were very successful with the girls having a great time with their friends. The photos were lovely and will hold special memories of their birthdays forever. John and Sylvie were lovely which made for a very relaxed atmosphere. – Sally
I went to Southdown Studios for my Hen Night Party for a make over and photo session.
I want to say a massive thank Jon and the two makeup artists for helping make my hen night an event I will never forget. You all made us feel so welcome and so at ease, so that we could enjoy this fantastic experience. I’ve already had a look through all the photos and they all look amazing!
Thank you for making me look gorgeous for the first time ever!!!! – Karolyn
